Dear 1st/2nd Grade Families:
In honor of Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday that celebrates the completion and new beginning of the year's Torah reading cycle, your child had the opportunity to:
1. Watch a video on how a Torah is written
You can watch portions or the entire 9 minute video:
2. View and carry a Torah
Please ask your child to tell you one or two things they learned and/or liked about the Torah.
3. Understand what a Torah is and why it is important to the Jewish people
Torah refers to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) which make up the story of the Jewish people.
4. Learn how a Torah is protected and decorated
The Torah is dressed and decorated because it is holy and is considered the core of Hashem's communication with Bnei Yisroel (The Children of Israel, i.e. The Jewish People).
The tops of the wooden rollers (called the "Trees of Life") of the Torah are often decorated either with rimonim or adorned with silver or gold crowns which covers both rollers, symbolizing G-d's sovereignty.
The Torah is sometimes adorned with a breastplate, while richly decorated mantles cover and protect it.
